Japan Bulk Carrier (JBC) – Turbulent Wake

Side view of JBC

The aim of this study is to evaluate the performance of scale resolving simulations (Hybrid RANS/LES, DES, WMLES, etc.) for the prediction of the flow around the Japan Bulk Carrier (JBC) in straight-ahead condition. JBC is a bulk carrier designed by the National Maritime Research Institute (NMRI), Yokohama National University and Ship Building Research Centre of Japan (SRC). The hull form has a block coefficient of 0.8580, which is 6% higher than this of KVLCC2. The high block coefficient leads to a highly unsteady vortical flow structure on the after body. The test case focuses on the analysis of the turbulence behaviour of the flow around the bare hull at even keel under parallel inflow condition. The results of the wind tunnel measurement campaign will be used for validating the simulation results.
